Steel making began in Illawarra in the 1920s and has since become one of the defining symbols of this region and its people. Based in the town of Port Kembla the steel industry has epitomised the working class values that underpin the local community, became a microcosm of changing community attitudes and multiculturalism and brought growth and prosperity to this area.

Steel Town - Port Kembla is a timely exhibition that delves into the Gallery’s art collection to celebrate the indelible impact of the steel industry on this area through paintings, drawing, photographs and assemblage.
