SCHOOL HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS

Wollongong Art Gallery provides workshops and activities for children aged 5 - 14 years during school holidays in January, July and October. Artist-run activities include experimentation and investigation of various media in a casual and fun environment.  

These workshops change regularly and sell out quickly, so book online early.​

TUESDAY 8 OCTOBER FULL DAY WORKSHOP
Students must bring their own morning tea and lunch
SELFIE SELF- PORTRAITS (painting) for 9 – 14 year olds Tania Maria Mastroianni –
artist and educator
Learn about the history of portraiture and the Archibald Prize in our portrait painting workshop. Students will take a ‘selfie’ of themselves using a mobile phone device or camera. These ‘selfies’ will be transformed into a self-portrait painting. 10am – 3pm

​WEDNESDAY 9 OCTOBER
CLAY SPACE ALIENS (ceramics) for 5-8 year olds Skye Zaracostas – artist and educator
Blast off into outer space in this fun and hands on workshop. In this interstellar experience you will learn clay hand building when making your imaginary clay alien to take home. 10am – 12 noon $22 + booking fee

DAY OF THE DEAD SKULL ROCKS (painting) for 5-8 year olds Skye Zaracostas – artist and educator
Create stunning handmade pieces of rock art inspired by the Mexican holiday Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). Make as many as you like and give them to your family and friends. 1.30 - 3.30pm $22 + booking fee

POP ART PET PORTRAITS (drawing & painting) for 5-8 year olds Megan Langlands – artist and educator 
Learn about the art movement Pop Art, by dipping into the colourful world of Andy Warhol. Pet portraits will be drawn from memory or from photographs brought in from home. 10am – 12pm $22 + booking fee

Learn weaving techniques to create your own woven basket using natural and recycled materials. 1.30 - 3.30pm $22 + booking fee

FREE AUSLAN TOUR for hearing impaired children aged 6 – 16 year olds
This is a free Auslan tour for children who are deaf or hearing impaired. The exhibition focus of this tour is our Rosie Deacon Fashion Forest Seduction…. An interactive explosion of technicolour Australiana, drenched in nostalgia from childhood in the 1990s and summer sentimentality. The installation is an interactive sensory experience, including costumes, wearables, sculpture, sound and video made by the artist and workshop participants. Visitors are encouraged to wear the costumes and glide down the all access catwalk, celebrating their transformation and delighting in the colours and the textures of the fashion forest installation. 11am – 12pm Bookings essential – places are limited

ART SMART is an introductory course for primary school children who want to improve their artistic skills through a range of fun and stimulating exercises.  ART SMART nurtures the exploration of individual creativity and expression through structured lesson plans outside the classroom context.  All lessons are taught by our specialist primary school art teacher.

JUNIOR ART TRAIL​

​​A free fun tour through the Gallery designed for 3 - 5 year olds. Children will explore art works through story-telling, art making, songs and games with the Junior Art Trail team. The trail will end with a tea party in the Gallery’s toy kitchen, a chance for the children to play, interact and re-​fuel.

When: Second Friday of every month, 10 - 10.45am
Dates: 12July, 9 August, 12 September, 11 October, 9 November and 12 December 2019
​Bookings essential: places limited to 12 children aged 3 - 5 years and their carers.
Morning Tea: 10.45 - 11.15am. This is not provided - please bring your own packed morning tea to have in the Gallery at the end of the tour.
